When selecting a funeral home, many families rely on the funeral home that last served their family. This decision is primarily based on the previous quality of service the family received. When unsure of which funeral facility to depend on though, families may wish to consider the reputation of the funeral home, the location of the facility, a religious affiliation, the cost and availability of services, and most importantly their level of comfort in trusting the funeral directors to care for their deceased and fulfill the family’s final wishes.

If you have been a long time resident, then you probably have an idea of what the competing funeral homes in our community have to offer. However, if you are new to the area and would like to educate yourself as to what your local funeral directors has to offer, then there are some ways to make your selection easier.  You might ride by a funeral facility and make a note of the general appearance. Is there adequate lighting and parking?  Stop in unannounced and consider how you are greeted, the general appearance of the facility, and whether or not the staff took the time to make you feel welcome and answer your questions. The most important factor in selecting a funeral home is that you are comfortable and trust the funeral directors to care for your loved one.

And, of course, like any other major decision, learn as much as possible about the product and the provider. Shop around, ask questions, become an educated consumer, and use your common sense. By following your instincts and a little good consumer technique, you will make the right decision.
