In Loving Memory of Carmella Barba Caruso
December 11, 1940 – May 19, 2025
Carmella Barba Caruso, age 84, passed away peacefully at home with her loving family by her side. A woman of remarkable grace, kindness, and beauty — both inside and out — Carmella touched the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Born on December 11, 1940, to the late Anthony and Mary Barba, Carmella was a lifelong resident of Wilmington, DE who carried the values of family, faith, and compassion throughout her life. She was a proud graduate of P.S. DuPont High School, where she made lifelong friendships and began her journey of nurturing others.
On April 30, 1960, Carmella married the love of her life, Arthur Caruso. Together they recently celebrated an extraordinary 65 years of marriage — a true testament to their enduring love and commitment. Their bond was the foundation of a family built on warmth, respect, and unwavering support.
Carmella began her career with the DuPont Company and later dedicated many years of service to Delmarva Power, where she eventually retired. She was a dedicated professional, admired for her strong work ethic, integrity, and warm demeanor.
She was the cherished mother of Arthur Caruso (wife Jill Caruso) of New York, NY, and Theresa Caruso Hartsell (husband Mark Hartsell) of Newport Beach, CA. Her greatest joy came from being "Nonna" to her beloved grandchildren: Preston and Chase Hartsell, and Dean and Leonardo Caruso, each of whom brought her immeasurable pride and happiness.
Carmella is also survived by her devoted husband, Arthur, and her loving brothers John and Joseph Barba. She was predeceased by her brothers Dominick, Frank, Vincent, and Thomas Barba, and by her sister, Theresa Barba Barcola.
Her legacy is one of love, strength, and elegance — a woman whose presence lit up a room and whose kindness left a lasting mark. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
A celebration of life mass will be held on Wednesday, May 28th at 11:00 AM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 4701 Weldin Road, Wilmington, DE.
