Strength can manifest itself in several ways. There are the physical elements that are discernible to the eye. And there are those that lay beneath the surface. Present, but more felt than seen.
Dennis C. Casper, Sr. of Hockessin, Delaware, embodied the best of both. A loving husband who was passionately involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren, Dennis passed away on Wednesday, October 9th, 2024. He was 70 years old. A service will be held on Thursday, October 17th, at 3 p.m. at Corleto-Latina Funeral Home (808 N. Union Street, Wilmington, DE 19805). The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Delaware.
Born on November 9, 1953, in Wilmington, Dennis was a lifelong resident of the state of Delaware. He graduated from Wilmington's Delcastle Technical High School in 1972 and parlayed the skills that he learned with his physical strength into his business – Casper's Electronics – that he owned and operated for several decades. Dennis met the love of his life, Patricia, at a party at the University of Delaware and began a beautiful life together that featured 48 years of marriage, two children – a daughter, Abbie (husband, Mark Boenke), and a son, Denny – and five grandchildren: Ambrose and Mara Casper, and Ian, Samuel, and Thomas Boenke. Dennis is also survived by his brothers, Carmine and Anthony, and a sister, Mary Kuhwald (née Casper). Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Carmine and Jean (née DelNegro), and his brother, Richard.
Known as “Coach Casper," the Caspers' home was filled with joy and laughter. Dennis loved devoting his free time to his children, whether playing highly competitive games of Risk and Monopoly or witnessing their sporting events. That didn't change when it came to his grandchildren.
A die-hard Eagles and Phillies fan, the Caspers' home was the gathering place throughout the fall to cheer on the Birds, catch up with family and friends, and eat until you threw in the towel.
Dennis loved to travel and spend his summers on the beach in Rehoboth and Dewey. He savored the times at The Starboard in Dewey or Papa John’s Bar alongside Grotto's Pizza on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk. Unfortunately for those who hoped to win a prize at Funland, Dennis was the "King of Whac-A-Mole" and would not relinquish the hammer until his children, nieces, and nephews all had giant stuffed animals to carry off as trophies. No matter where Dennis would travel, he would want to be comfortable, so trips to the beach included wagons full of chairs, coolers, and umbrellas – enough equipment to almost necessitate a moving truck.
In his final days, a nurse at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania remarked how strong Dennis was by looking at his size. Those same hands that were used to install garage doors and other large fixtures also helped build a family rooted in love and togetherness. Dennis C. Casper, Sr. was strength personified in every way imaginable, both seen and unseen.
A Memorial Service will be held for Dennis on Thursday October 17, 2024 at the Corleto-Latina Family Center, 807 N. Union Street, Wilmington, from 3:00pm - 4:30pm. A Remembrance service will start at 4:00pm.
