Maria V Figueroa, age 82, of Wilmington, Delaware passed away peacefully on Sunday October 10th, 2021. Maria was born in Naranjito, Puerto Rico on October 24th, 1938, to the late Felix Carrion and Natividad Guzman. She went to school and started working at a very young age to help raised her five brothers whom she loved very much. By the age of 19 Maria was blessed by the birth of her first born and two years later by the birth of her second child.
In 1975 Maria embarked in a new journey and moved to Wilmington De with her two daughters. She was determined to make a better life and did everything possible to accomplished that. She held many jobs to support herself and her daughters. She refused to live off the system. Maria is described as a fearless warrior. She beat Cancer and smacked diabetes on the face because she ate what she wanted and when she wanted it, specially her “pan sobao”. No matter what life threw at her she was always ready with her armor. Maria had a heart of gold and was humble and loving. Those who truly knew her can attest to this statement. She had a strong character, but her heart was tender and loving like a teddy bear. Maria was an active member of St’s Paul Catholic Church where she met her loving husband and received the sacrament of Holy Matrimony while attending a retreat. Her love for her Viejo was pure and unconditional. The highlight of the day was sharing a cup of coffee in the morning with him and a scoop of ice cream every night.
Maria is preceded in death by her parents, her first granddaughter, Yomaris “Yomi” Ortiz, her grandson Baby Hernandez and her great grandchild Josue Kiano Torres along with extended family, aunts, uncles.
Maria is survived by her loving husband of 38 years Eladio “Layo” Figueroa, her 2 daughters Maribel (Francisco) Hernandez of Florida and Carmen (David) Silva of Wilmington DE. She’s also survived by her granddaughters Jessica (Hector) Roman, Desiree (Ruben) Cabral, her one and only grandson Matthew D Silva, her great grandchildren Marco X Torres, Skylynn Rivera, Gianni and Ezra Cabral. Maria had a very special place in her heart for Luis A “Luisito” Hernandez, whom she loved like a grandchild. Maria is also survived by her brothers Manuel (Carmen) Carrion of Connecticut, Antonio Baez of New Castle De, Victor Baez of Puerto Rico, Luis Baez, and Miguel Baez of Wilmington DE and a host of nephews and nieces.
The family would like to thank Maria’s longtime friend Blanca Quiñones for the caring and love she provided during the past 6 years. Annie Leon for her weekly visits and for making mom laugh when she needed the most.
Maria dances now in the presence of our Savior. She now sings with the choir of angels. She now praises God as she walks through the golden streets of heaven.
A Mass of Christiana Burial will be celebrated on Monday October 18, 2021, at 10:30am in St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 4th and Jackson Streets, In Wilmington, DE. Where family and friends are invited to call after 9:30am. Interment will follow Mass in Cathedral Cemetery.
