Maria Luisa Gonzalez Alers

Maria Luisa Gonzalez Alers (aka Luisita and Titita), 82, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2021, at her daughter’s home surrounded by family.

Maria was born on August 25, 1938 in Isabela, Puerto Rico to Antonio Gonzalez Martinez and Maria Luisa Alers Corchado. She received a bachelor’s in Elementary Education and a master’s degree in Administration and Supervision from the University of Puerto Rico. Maria had a passion for teaching and education. She was a dedicated K-12 & schoolteacher and through her career, she became a school director, district supervisor, and retired, after more than 30 years of service, as a Superintendent for the School District of Hormigueros, Puerto Rico.  

Within the teaching world, she met her other half, Jose Ismael Gonzalez Lagoa, also a teacher and school administrator, and married until his passing in 2012, and we hope they are together again in heaven. Together, they were advocates for teachers’ rights and part of the founding members of one of Puerto Rico educator’s associations known as Educadores Puertorriqueños en Acción in the early ’80s, which continues to date. After her retirement, she continued teaching at ASPIRA, at small colleges, and was the director of an elementary school.  

Maria was kind-hearted, and 100% altruistic with relatives and others in her community. Many foster children stayed at her house until they were ready to continue life on their own. She would spend her free time helping anyone in need (no task was too small) but never neglecting her children or husband. She was a devoted mother; the #1 fan of her children.  

Maria is survived by her son Hans and his wife, Myrnaliz; Yamaira and her husband, Luis, and her grandchildren Karolina, Hans Marco, Abner, and Natalie; and her extended children Edwin, Ines, and Harry. A wonderful wife, mother, and friend, she will be deeply missed by all that knew her.

A viewing will be held on Friday, April 23rd, 2021 at Corleto Latina Funeral Home, 800 N Union St. Wilmington, DE 19805 at 10 AM-11 AM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 PM, St. Rocco Parish, 313 Sunny Dell Rd, Avondale, PA 19311.
