Patricia Casper Obituary

Patricia Casper

April 11, 1953 – December 21, 2024

The irony of Patricia Casper (nee Grajewski) passing away at the age of 71 just before the holidays is that a precious gift was taken away from all who knew her.

There is a reason why during any moment of celebration – whether it was Christmas, a birthday party, or an Eagles game – Pat's house was the place to be.

She was everyone's friend.

She was quick to welcome you with a warm, radiant smile. She was always there to offer support with a helping hand. She always listened and never judged or inserted her opinion.

There was always laughter. Tons of it. It didn't need to be a party. She could be doing the most mundane of household chores or grinding through another training session for a marathon, and your face would hurt from all of the smiling.

And, there was also always food. Too much for however many people she entertained. It didn't matter the size of the party. No one went hungry. And to make matters worse, she was a phenomenal cook, so you threw caution to the wind and sampled a little too much of everything in sight, bracing for the bellyaches that would likely follow. Pat could turn the pickiest eater into a foodie with her culinary talents, from salads to rich Italian dishes to mac and cheese to cookies. Diets can always start tomorrow.

Pat jam-packed enough memories in her 71 years to last several lifetimes.

Born in Wilmington, Delaware, Pat was as smart as she was loving. She was an ace student at St. Hedwig's High School, graduating in 1971, before earning her associate's degree from Goldey-Beacom College. While in college, it was at a party at the University in Delaware where Pat met the love of her life, Dennis. They settled in Hockessin and built a loving home during their 48 years of marriage. After just a little more than two months apart, Dennis passed away on October 9, the two are reunited.

At her home, Pat treasured her time in the yard. She was passionate about botany and embraced the hard work and care it took for her plants and flowers to flourish, excitedly anticipating the Philadelphia Flower Show each year to add to her garden or incorporate new tricks of the trade. She devoted that same loving touch and attention to the beautiful family she and Dennis created. They have two children – a daughter, Abbie (husband, Mark Boenke), and a son, Dennis Jr. – and five grandchildren: Ambrose and Mara Casper, and Ian, Samuel, and Thomas Boenke.

Pat is also survived by five brothers and sisters: Mary Jo Rookard, Joe Grajewski (Carol), Peggy Carroll (Jerry), Matt Grajewski (Lynne), and Mark Grajewski (Renee). She was preceded in death by a sixth sibling, James, and her parents, Joseph and Mary Grajewski.

She adored her grandchildren and always jumped at the opportunity to babysit and spend time with them. She cherished their sporting events and even planned her final trip to Germany earlier this year to visit her daughter around the grandkids' baseball and soccer games to experience as much of the action as possible. When Pat wasn't cheering on her favorite athletes, she was a die-hard Eagles, Flyers, and Phillies fan who was dialed into every game, whether watching on TV or listening to the radio while at the beach.

As loving as Pat was, make no mistake about it, she was also a fighter with a competitive spirit.

Pat was a fitness and adventure enthusiast whose vitality and energy were contagious and inspired others to follow. She conquered 15 marathons, including 10 in Disney World, dozens of triathlons, a Half Ironman, and countless other races.

She yearned to be in the pool as much as possible, competing in the Senior Olympics. Pat was very much at home in the water abiding by the quote, "Into the water I go to lose my mind and find my soul."

She spent more than 40 years as a top-notch legal secretary at the prestigious Wilmington-based law firm Richards, Layton & Finger before retiring in 2019.

Pat rejoiced in traveling, whether it was the annual family summer trip to Dewey Beach, excursions to exotic tropical locales, or roaming Europe with her daughter, Abbie. They vividly recounted several fond memories from trips to Crete, Italy, and Paris.

Her toughest battle began in April 2023. Cancer revealed the magnitude of her strength and compassion. She never complained. She refused to miss any of her grandkids' activities. She would even have a hard time admitting to the doctors how much of a toll the disease weighed on her. She remained selfless, worried more about the declining health of her husband than herself. She always made sure to take care of the nurses who comforted her, whether it was through lunches or sweet treats – there's the food again. She grappled with cancer valiantly until the bitter end, as her children surrounded her at the time of her passing.
