Phyllis M. Calomino, 95, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 23, 2023. She was born in Wilmington, DE on October 11, 1927 to the late Paolo and Mary Marcocci.
Phyllis married her husband, John, in 1946. Prior to the birth of their first daughter, she became a member of the Women's Army Corps (WAC) while her husband served in the U.S. Army. After their daughter’s birth, she focused her life on being a homemaker and mother.
Phyllis was a dedicated mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She had a passion for cooking and baking, especially during the Holidays. She enjoyed spending time at her daughter and son-in-law's beach house, and her many trips to Atlantic City with her daughter, Barbara. Her biggest enjoyment was spending time with her family. She loved vacationing with them every year at various resort locations as well as attending each of her great-grandchildren's school and sporting events. She will truly be missed by all those who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, John Calomino, daughter, Phyllis Ann Kaczmarczyk, son John, Jr., sisters Josephine DiLena, Bess Witkowski, and Edith Guyer, step-father, John Vasso, and son-in-law, Richard Derby.
She is survived by her two daughters, Barbara Derby (her caregiver for the last two years) and Joanna DiFilippo (husband, Fran); grandchildren, Joseph McGrellis, Jr. (wife, Laurie), Felicia Boyer (Bob Sheppard), Courtney Gifford, and step-grandaughter Olivia DiFilippo. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren Madelyn, Leah, and Sara Boyer, and Joseph, III and Natalie McGrellis.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday May 5th, at 10am in St. Elizabeth’s Roman Catholic Church, 809 S. Broom St. Wilmington. Family and Friends are invited to a visitation on Thursday evening May 4, from 5:30pm-7:30pm at the Corleto-Latina Family Center, 807 N. Union St, Wilmington. Interment will follow Mass on Friday in Cathedral Cemetery.
