Phyllis Witcher Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Phyllis Jane Witcher, who left us peacefully due to natural causes on November 21, 2024, at the age of 86. Born on February 23, 1938, in Wilmington, Delaware, Phyllis was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who touched the lives of many throughout her remarkable journey.
Phyllis was the cherished daughter of Karl and Ruth Herrmann and was preceded in death by her beloved brother, Douglas Herrmann, and her former husband, Murray Witcher, who was the father of her two children. Phyllis is survived by her son, David Witcher, her daughter, Stephanie Stewart, and her four beloved grandchildren, Madison, Kendall, Mason, and Sophia, who were the pride and joy of her life.
An alumna of the University of Delaware, Phyllis earned her undergraduate degree before going on to achieve her master's degree from West Chester University. Her commitment to education was reflected in her career as a teacher in the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District, where she inspired and nurtured countless students.
Phyllis also dedicated a significant portion of her life to service beyond the classroom. She proudly served as a United States Naval Academy Blue and Gold Officer, helping prospective Delaware students gain admission to the prestigious academy. Throughout her life, she was a steadfast advocate for her community, volunteering for the Delaware State Board of Mental Health, serving on the board of the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, and being an elected member of the school board in the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District.
Her professional journey was diverse; she famously began her working life as a waitress at the iconic Delaware restaurant, the Charcoal Pit, during her high school years. Later, she took on the role of a textile technician for Sears Roebuck & Company in Chicago before returning her focus to education and advocacy. Phyllis founded Protecting Marriage Inc., an organization dedicated to promoting fair and equitable divorce legislation. Her tireless efforts were recognized when she received the Giraffe Heroes Award, celebrating her compassionate courage in standing up for the common good.
Phyllis was a woman of many talents and interests. For over 50 years, she enjoyed the camaraderie of her bridge club, where her quick wit and humorous stories made every gathering special. She was an avid cook, known for her delicious dishes, and took great pleasure in sewing and flower arranging, even winning a first-place ribbon at the Garden Club of America flower show.
The warmth and dedication Phyllis showed to her family and friends will always be remembered. She was loved for her infectious laughter and her ability to bring joy to those around her.
