Sylvia N. Massa, 85, of Wilmington, left this earth peacefully to be with her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at Ingleside Assisted Living. She was born on Columbus Day and was a lifelong resident of Wilmington, Delaware. She was the daughter of the late Pietro and Adelasia (Nai) Massa.
Sylvia was a graduate of the University of Delaware and worked for Delaware Health and Social Services for over 20 years, often assisting the Wilmington Mayor’s office with similar programs. A faithful member of St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Sylvia began singing in the children's choir in 4th grade. She sang in the adult choir for decades and was a member of the Blessed Virgin Mary Solidarity, forming many lifelong friendships. She cherished her Italian heritage as a member of Friends of Italian Culture and volunteered annually at the Italian Festival. Sylvia diligently traced her family tree back to its Italian roots, often writing in Italian to distant relatives. She made many trips to Italy bringing her mother to visit family in Grosseto, and travelling with Rev. Roberto Balducelli, longtime pastor of St. Anthony, to attend the Pope’s mass in St Peter's Square. Her worldly travels also included Israel, Turkey, Germany, and cruises with friends. Family and friends were especially important. Sylvia was a devoted Godmother to several, and enjoyed keeping track of birthdays and special occasions of all generations.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Joseph N. Massa, sister-in-law, Sally Massa, and many beloved relatives.
Sylvia is survived by countless cousins. She was grateful for all those who visited, called, or sent cards to stay connected. Among those she would wish to mention were cousins, Frank Garosi, Guido and Cathy Garosi, Eleanor Nai Hall, Norma Nai Frederick, April Nai Brockson, Neil Frederick, Scott Hall, Donna Hall Carpenter (Goddaughter). She will be remembered by many devoted friends, especially Tess Bautista, Mary Ann Bernacky, Linda Barnett, Philomena Lazarczyk and others.
Family and friends may call at the Corleto-Latina Funeral Home, 808 N Union Street in Wilmington, DE on Thursday morning, January 5, 2023, from 10am to 11am with a blessing by Rev. Mark J. Wrightson at 11:30am. Interment at Cathedral Cemetery will be private.
