Terry James Newitt, 74, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on September 9, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Terry was born in Mansfield, England and came to the United States as a child. At an early age he was inspired by Andrew Wyeth's artwork and he began to paint, winning awards throughout his schooling.
Becoming a prolific artist, he used watercolors and acrylics in a splashy, vibrant, semi-abstract style and loved painting on location. He loved the mountains and would hike to his painting locations, such as the landscapes of Donegal Ireland and the White Mountains. His work appears in many private collections including President Joe Biden. His art exhibitions include Art Expo (NYC), Delaware Art Museum, and many others.
Teaching was a true passion of Terry's. Graduating from University of Delaware, he taught English for several years before finding his true place teaching art at Archmere Academy where he taught art for 40 years as well as coached wrestling and golf. He later earned a master’s degree in Art Education at University of the Arts. "Music and art are the heart of what we pass down to our children” he would say, urging students to make a difference in the world. He was awarded Delaware’s Art Educator of the Year, and his students garnered a record number of National Awards.
Terry had a playful side. An alum of Woodstock festival, he threw a Gatsby-themed party attended by Bruce Springsteen and Andrew Wyeth. Terry and his twin brother loved to recreate the Blues Brothers Soul Man act. The twins were even contracted by an acting agency appearing on the Conan O’Brien Show.
Terry was a family man, cherishing his wife, and proud of his children, and grandchildren. He is survived by wife of 49 years Robin, daughter Alison Hilley, son Jamie Newitt, his identical twin brother Peter S. Newitt, brother Robin R. Newitt, sister Carol Bryant, sister Anne Snow, grandchildren Nicoya and Landon Hilley, and countless students and friends.
